What does Hollaback do?
Five years after our intitial founding, we are excited to introduce our own iPhone app to the world. Hollaback 2.0 will be made available for download in June 2010 and will let mobile users press a button on their phones upon experiencing street harassment or assault. The program will use GPS mapping to drop a pin on a city-wide map of exactly when and where the assault occurred and will collect and store this data to systemically build the case for legislative action on this very real problem. Hollaback 2.0 will be brought to scale globally and rolled out to our 6 sister sites for replication in their respective cities and countries. In Saudi Arabia, India, and Egypt, where pre-existing anti-harassment communities and efforts exist, we will replicate and package our program for use there as well.
How are they different?
No other organization has sought to end street harassment on a global scale nor introduced a concept that is conceivably capable of doing this and generating revenue. Hollaback creates a new relationship between citizen, journalist, and government, allowing for maximum transperancy in a totally democratic process. Our replicable platform can be used in governments and police agencies alike.
Why could Hollaback NYC be BIG?
Street harassment is a universal problem. Since 2005, Hollaback and Emily May have been featured on many national news programs including Good Morning America, CNBC, Fox, and all metro NY newspapers. We maintain a press list of over 140 journalists, reporters, and producers who have reached out to Hollaback in the past 5 years. With the release of our new iPhone app for a new decade, we will reengage our media allies to maximize coverage and support. We expect the results to be huge. Because of the replicability of the Hollaback mobile app, this program can be scaled globally and used in other industries and in municipal governments alike.
How they plan to make money:
We have succesfully sold ad space on our blog and will continue to utilize this channel when needed. When a user presses the Hollaback button on her cell phone to Hollaback, she will receive a ping-back email submission form asking her to submit more information which will also contain advertising. The application will be made available on a click-to-donate basis and we will continue to seek grant funding and money from individual donors.
Our thoughts:
No thoughts at the moment. Very interesting!
