What does Dermanaut do?

Dermanaut is an electronic medical record system designed specifically for dermatologists. The web application can be described as Google Maps for the patientsʼ skin, keeping a historic visual record of past and present problems. This interface allows dermatologists to place markers where problems exist; and through a series of dermatology-specific pop-ups, accurately and efficiently record the problem at hand. This longitudinal interface allow dermatologists to see the development of the problem and responses to therapy over time by means of visual representation of the data, including location on the body diagram and diagnostic photos of the problem, both past and present.

This fluid interface will allow dermatologist to capture a patient encounter quickly, seamlessly integrated within their existing process while recording the necessary information for both clinical and billing purposes. Through our beta trial we have seen an increase in quality of care, record accuracy and time savings.

How are they different?

Historic Visual Record: By recording and displaying dermatology-specific problems on a body diagram Dermanaut quickly and accurately displays pertinent medical information including diagnostic photos, dramatically improving the treatment of ongoing problems such as skin cancer.

1-Click Diagnosis and Treatments: Through our user-centered design process, we have developed a workflow that accurately follows the process dermatologists use to diagnose and treat patients. Our system improves this process with standardized language and semi- automated efficiencies, the end result is significantly more accurate records in dramatically less time than the existing paper process.

Office-Specific Customizations: Dermanaut allows offices to make minor adjustments to the application to include their own common diagnosis and treatments. Additionally, offices can add their own products to the system (which many dermatologists sell in the office as supplemental income).

Why could Dermanaut be BIG?

The federal government has mandated that by 2014, all medical records must be kept electronically. Currently, only about 15% of dermatologists are using an electronic record. This is attributed to the market being saturated by generic medical record systems and an absence of specialty-specific systems.

Although this adoption rate is one of the lowest of all medicine, other medical specialties are also struggling with the lack of specialty-specific systems. After establishing itself as the premiere dermatology record system, we will expand into these underserved markets. This specialty-specific approach is the David to the medical IT Goliaths such as Cerner, Epic, and Allscripts.

How they plan to make money:

Dermanaut will be sold as a service with setup, training, and support included. We anticipate selling Dermanaut for $1,000 per month per provider. Discounts will be offered to reference clients and for annual subscriptions. An average provider will net us $7,776 gross profit. We will reach break even with 225 subscribers, which we project reaching in December 2011.

Our thoughts:

No thoughts at the moment. Very interesting!
