What does Mutual Mobile do?

In just two years, the Austin-based tech startup has not only garnered the unanimous support of their peers but has also grown a national client list of corporations vying for a piece of the mobile applications market. What began as an iPhone development shop has evolved into a full-service mobile development and marketing agency, winning contracts to produce licensable products and platforms for the Harvard Business Review, Dell, SXSW and StumbleUpon.

How are they different?

We operate at a scale that very few other companies have achieved – 70+ people working exclusively on building premier mobile apps for big brands and enterprise. As a result of this, we can, in most cases, build it better, faster, and sometimes even cheaper.

Having completed over 50 projects, we have a vast internal codebase that ensures speed of development and robustness of components. Additionally, our culture is very focused on innovation and has organically grown a suite of technologies that help us and our clients build bleeding edge apps.

Why could Mutual Mobile be BIG?

To our knowledge, we are the largest dedicated mobile design, dev, strategy shop in the country. We have built applications for almost every industry and have a unique perspective on challenges in mobile development. As a result, we’ve created a series of proprietary technologies that solve common problems.

How they plan to make money:

- By providing the services that can’t be commoditized (top-tier design / dev)

- By licensing technologies we develop

- By creating products and solving needs in enterprise mobility

  City: Aliso Viejo, California
  Country: United States
  CEO: Alex Quilici
Founders: Doug Henderson, Ken Brickley, David Key, Miles Valentine
Category: Mobile Apps   Funding: VC
Tags: voicmail, mobile, apps   Employees: 6-15

What does YouMail do?

We provide visual voicemail on any internet connected device – mobile phones, iPads, computers – that unifies your mobile, home, and work messages.

How are they different?

We’re focused on:
1) A great experience for callers – including greeting callers by name or personal greetings
2) A leverage of community – users post greetings, users provide caller id info, users tell us who the spammers are
3) One-click upgrade from existing voicemail – effortlessly get a better experience.
4) Making voicemail easy to share – one click posting to Facebook, for example, as well as easy IMing and texting.

Why could YouMail be BIG?

1b+ mobile voicemail boxes are out there, and it’s a horrific experience. We replace that with a dramatically better experience at no cost to consumers. We already have well over 1m users, and have handle roughly 500,000,000 calls. We also have 6 carriers that have made YouMail their voicemail, with 2 more signed and on the way.

How they plan to make money:

We make money on free users through advertising, and we have a number of premium offerings we’ve been able to upgrade people to.

VisibleVote.us - Tell Congress how to vote for you & then track if they do it or not! Logo   Company Visible Vote
    http://visiblevote.us
  Founded: 07/01/2009
  City: Chicago, Illinois
  Country: United States
  CEO: Paul Everton
Founders: Paul Everton, Frank Robles, Steven Trac
Category: Mobile Apps   Funding: Angel
Tags: government, public policy, Congress, advise Congress, voting app   Employees: 2-5

What does Visible Vote do?

Voters can tell Congress how to vote on specific bills & track if they do it or not. There is also a back-end portal that can be used for congressional campaigns, legislative offices and state political parties to use to express their viewpoints on bills, conduct custom polls, and accept donations via handheld device.

How are they different?

As the largest political voting app, Visible Vote is the only app to track your legislators votes and compare them to yours. For example, our app will tell you that Senator John Doe has agreed with you 90% of the time. 96% of our users say they will use our app to decide whom to vote for in November.

Why could Visible Vote be BIG?

Our current numbers: more than 165,000 users, more than 1.7 million votes sent to Congress, more than 20 congressional campaigns have registered with our portal. As our numbers grow, the voter’s voice becomes even more powerful. Legislators will have no choice but to take the votes from our app into serious consideration, and then will be expected to explain when they do NOT vote with the majority of their constituents.

How they plan to make money:

Visible Vote sells licenses of its software outside of the political environment to organizations/companies in order for them to poll employees, issue major news announcements or even run internal elections.

Tales2Go.com – Storytime, Anytime.

tales2go.com - Storytime, Anytime. Logo   Company Tales2Go – Kids’ Audio Books and Stories On-The-Go
    http://www.tales2go.com
  Founded: 2009
  City: Washington, District of Columbia
  Country: United States
  CEO: William Weil
  Founders: William and Tracey Weil
Category: Mobile Apps   Funding: Self-Funded
Tags: tales to go, tales 2 go, kids’ story books, kids story books, kids’ audio books, kids audio books   Employees: 2-5

What does Tales2Go – Kids’ Audio Books and Stories On-The-Go do?

A first-of-its kind subscription service/app that gives moms and dads instant, on-demand and unlimited access to over a thousand great kids’ audio stories from leading audio publishers (e.g., Scholastic and Recorded Books) and award-winning storytellers (e.g., Bill Harley, Diane Ferlatte, Donald Davis, Heather Forest) to stream to their iPhones/iTouches/iPads. We launched in the Apple App Store in February, have been awarded a Parents’ Choice Award (among their inaugural mobile app winners) and were called a “Top Five Must-Have iPhone App for Parents” by CNET.

Great for kids 3-11 (and the whole family), stories range from fairytales to classics (e.g., Curious George Rides a Bike) to popular series and characters (e.g., Diary of a Wimpy Kid). And we’re adding more every day. Tales2Go is on-the-go entertainment that can be played in the car (on the way to soccer or a family road trip – played up through the car speakers), at the doctor’s office or even at home during quiet times at home.

How are they different?

Over a thousand great kids’ audio stories – all within one app. And a faster, easier and cheaper way to deliver audio stories to kids – on a device that is intoxicating to them. The alternatives are complicated or costly, e.g., downloading and syncing individual stories, etc. And that listening to audio stories is like spinach pizza in that kids’ think they’re eating pizza and parents think they’re serving spinach (i.e. listening to audio stories has been shown to expose kids to new vocabulary, enhance their listening skills and foster a love of literature). A classic win-win.

Why could Tales2Go – Kids’ Audio Books and Stories On-The-Go be BIG?

There will be an estimated 150+ million smartphones in North American in 2011. Of iPhone owners, one-third are moms; and 60% of those share their phones with their kids. Further, many moms and kids have iTouches. A one percent penetration of the U.S. Apple device market [alone] would be significant – much less all devices, worldwide.

And beyond kids, there is room to age the service up to adult audiences and or roll-up other kids apps.

How they plan to make money:

Service starts as a 30-day free trial, then requires a $24.99 annual subscription (or roughly $2.00 per month).

What does Kony Solutions do?

Kony Solutions provides a suite of products and support services that enable Fortune 500 companies to offer consumers feature-rich mobile applications in less time and at lower costs than any other solution available. Kony’s proprietary Write Once, Run Everywhere single application definition enables applications to be designed and developed just once, in a device independent manner, and deployed across multiple channels, including on-device applications, mobile web, SMS, web gadgets, desktop applications, and mobile operating systems.

How are they different?

Kony Solutions delivers a unique approach to address the challenges of developing brand-consistent mobile applications across a variety of platforms. Different delivery channels and multiple device platforms create a complicated and costly development, management and maintenance problem for companies. The Kony Mobile Application Platform™ leverages the Write Once, Run Everywhere technology for designing, developing, deploying and managing mobile applications. This proprietary application definition enables mobile applications to be developed just once and deployed across all mobile platforms with less time to market and total cost of ownership than individual development solutions. The Kony Mobile Application Platform also optimizes the functions and user experience of a device’s native capabilities to deliver a differentiated, hosted, and managed mobile solution.

Why could Kony Solutions be BIG?

With a recent Gartner study noting that mobile phones are set to outpace personal computers as the most common web access device worldwide by 2013 and ABI Research predicting shoppers will order $2.4 billion in physical goods from websites via mobile devices, companies can’t afford not to have a mobile presence. With an incredibly fragmented mobile device market and many new and emerging technologies, companies have to spend their mobile dollars wisely, making sure they reach the most consumers. Using its Write Once, Run Everywhere technology Kony is able to deliver brand consistent, feature-rich mobile applications for companies in less time, and at lower costs than any other solution across all mobile devices and operating systems (Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian etc.)

How they plan to make money:

Companies license and subscribe to the Kony Solutions platform.

NutriSleuth.com – Connecting Food Consumers to Data

  Country: United States
  CEO: Paula Patrice
Founders: Valerie Daley and Paula Patrice
Category: Mobile Apps   Funding: Seed/Friends & Family
Tags: Consumer Health Technology   Employees: 2-5

What does NutriSleuth do?

NutriSleuth is a consumer health profile management platform offering tools to those suffering from food allergies and chronic conditions. These tools are used to ensure safety and encourage the user to explore products and places outside of their bubble.
NutriSleuth has 2 products: NutriSleuth iPhone App and NutriSleuth SafetyDine Restaurant Plugin
The mobile app is developed and ready for the App Store. It scans barcodes and cross references registered health profiles against the foods ingredients to alert the consumer of conflicts.
The NutriSleuth SafetyDine Restaurant Plugin lets users send a digital/standardized allergy profile to a restaurant when making a reservation to inform the establishment of their condition. In development.

How are they different?

NutriSleuth’s focus is on creating a trusted brand name for consumers to digitize and standardize their health profiles. Our core IP lies in the development of parameters to digitally map every possible variation of food labeling to allergies and chronic conditions (and UPCs by extension). Our work is backed by the leading food allergy organizations and world renowned dietitians.

Other developers work off of limited databases or have faulty parameters (one even displays an error on their iTunes screenshot!).

Restaurant and e-Commerce plug-ins were developed as one offs in house.

Why could NutriSleuth be BIG?

Creating the trusted brand for consumer food health presents a large opportunity for brands, retailers, restaurants, and anyone looking for consumer health data. NutriSleuth would be the channel to the 40 million Americans affected by food allergies, ~150 million Americans suffering from a chronic disease for the stated markets.

The Company has many macro factors supporting it including:
-Rapid smartphone adoption
-Funding and focus on healthcare technology and mHealth
-Increasing levels of food allergies per capita
-Offering the holy grail to brands in being able to connect to the consumer AT THE POINT OF PURCHASE.

How they plan to make money:

Revenue lines will include:
-Consumer app downloads at $4.99 per download
-Professional app downloads at $14.99 per download
-Sponsorship and advertising revenue within the consumer app
-White-label license revenue from healthcare payers, retailers, and clinical trial providers
-Powering supermarket e-Commerce sites with allergy filters
